Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Ryan Lochte finished 2nd. The favorite Aussies did not medal.

Nathan Adrian had the lead after the 1st leg and Michael Phelps extended it by half a body length. But, by the time Cullen Jones finished his leg, the lead had shrunk by half. Ryan Lochte was not able to close it out.
