Got a new lcd monitor today Hanns-G JC199D for $135.

Improved my sales calls skills. I've been close to securing a couple accounts now.

Great Teacher Onizuka is a worthwhile Japanese drama to watch. It's about a former gangster who now wants to be a teacher. He fights through adversity and eventually earns the respect of fellow teachers and students. You can watch episodes on Youtube.

For the rest of the day: I will be reading emails & practicing my Chinese.

4 Hour Work Week

4 Hour Work Week

Just finished reading the four-hour work week.

I can sum up the book in three phrases: Work less and do more, Passive income through outsourcing, Mini-retirements.

On page 231 there is a similar story to the one below (Makes sense doesn’t it ?) :

American consultant was at a pier in a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow-fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied only a little while.

The consultant then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The fisherman said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The American then asked the Mexican how he spent the rest of his time.

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, senor.”

The American consultant scoffed, “I am business consultant and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and, with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution.

“You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But senor, how long will this all take?”

To which the American consultant replied, “15-20 years.”

“But what then, senor?” asked the fisherman.

The consultant laughed, and said, “That’s the best part! When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public. You’ll become very rich, you would make millions!”

“Millions, senor?” replied the Mexican. “Then what?

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

Update: About 251 pages into "Why Do I Love These People?" Will keep you updated. So far it's good. It's a bunch of short real-life stories of families from different ethnic backgrounds (Chinese, Indian, Irish, African, Japanese, Filipino, etc.) working through their marriage, family situation, experiencing inter-racial marriages, providing their children with new opportunities in the U.S., etc.

Week In Review

Stock market took a tumble is an understatement. Exited most of my positions Tuesday.
Made only one trade since then- OMTR

I am going to start making watch lists either on a day to day basis or every two days.

Working 8:30-5:00pm is ridiculously exhausting. The days go by fast. Especially, since now I've found myself creating routine at work. e.g. Calling & following up all morning, Quoting clients in the afternoon. etc.

I opened "twenty-one" files this week. Relatively speaking, the full-time employees open anywhere from 5-15 files a week. But, they also have to handle their existing accounts.

What I've Noticed/ Would like to try approaching it differently next week:

I use my eyes a lot through out the day. At work and then when I get back home.

At work: I'm on the computer for most of the 7 1/2 hours I am there.
At home: I have to sift through stock screens & read books

Four-Hour Work Week

Came back from my internship at around 5. I am pretty much on the phone or the computer the entire day. Not the way, I'd like to live the rest of my life....

I got 4-Hour Workweek in the mail today.

I am sixty pages into 4-Hour Workweek.

Let me tell you, this book is amazing!

If you are looking to separate yourself from "millions" of mediocre 9-5 upper middle/ middle class, this book is for you.

What I've gained from this so far is to take risks and do things out of your comfort zone. The worst thing that could happen don't always happen and the upsides can be tremendous.

There is so much in this book. It was worth the $10 bucks I paid for it.

Stock market dropped big time today. Had to exit most of my positions.

I am still in on SWHC.

Time to run through my stock scans and filter out some stocks.

Long day at work today.

Looking forward to reading The Year of Magical Thinking & The Bonfire Of The Vanities.

Peace.

Goals

Jul 23, 2007 -

Having too many goals risks spreading yourself too thin. Too many goals can mean not enough effort and time goes into achieving each and every one of your goals.

However,

Having only one goal is similar to putting all your eggs in one basket. If you fail to reach your goal, it may be difficult to handle.

I have a lot I want to achieve this summer, but I am only going to focus on goals that will continue to be important to me even after summer.

Four main goals for the summer!

1.Maintain a run/work out schedule

Action Plan: Run/ Work out everyday.

I've been active for as long as I can remember. I've participated in all kinds of sports. I was on the high school track & field & cross -country team. At least twice a week I pick up a basketball. But, there as days where I don't exercise at all. I'd like to get to the point where I am exercising everyday.

2. Kick-Start Studying Chinese

Action Plan: Study Vocab & Grammar. One lesson a week.
Getting back to my roots is where I am beginning to feel more and more comfortable in life. I tried last year to get back into learning Chinese at the university, but I stopped after the 2nd quarter. Hopefully, this summer I can get to some level of comprehension.

3. Keep an open perspective on life

Action Plan: Read a book a week. Keep social life active.
People have different experiences and no single person has the world's knowledge, rather everyone has a piece of the world's knowledge. By reading about their experiences I can get a better understanding of life and come up with innovative ideas- keeping my life more interesting.

4. Achieve 5% return for summer alone

Action Plan: Cut losses, Let Gains Run

Since my internship (which I will post about later), I've had less time to focus on trading stocks. As a result, my trades haven't been managed as well as they could have. But, I believe I can get back to higher gains. I will continue to build my knowledge about stock trading and cut my losses. The money I get from my internship will be put 100% into stocks. This will give me more leverage.

Looking towards Monday

Jul 22, 2007 -

Why do you wake up in the morning?

What keeps you going?

Agent Smith:
Why, Mr. Anderson? Why do you do it? Why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you're fighting for something? For more that your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Yes? No? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception. The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can't win. It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?

Neo
: Because I choose to.

Lets make Monday the beginning of a profitable week.
I am in 80% stocks/ %20 cash.
Keeping my eye on: SWHC, FTEK, TRCR, DSTI

Success

Jul 21, 2007 -

Everyday is an opportunity to improve as a person either intellectually, physically, mentally, or socially.

To ensure that progress is being made on a day-to-day basis, persistently testing your limits, experiencing new subject matters, and novel situations is necessary. If everyday is routine and done the same exact way, what is it that you are gaining?

Breaking out of routine could mean something as little as brushing your teeth with the hand you don't normally brush your teeth with. Doing a task that you normally do more effectively or differently can bring about interesting results. The other day at work, I tried to change & vary the tone of my voice on the phone to see if the client would respond differently. Previously, I had kept my tone fairly consistent. The results were positive and I learned a lot from changing the tone of my voice and varying it from time to time. It helped me become more enthusiastic on the phone, which helped the client feel more easy and willing to respond to my requests and pitches.

If you can identify highlight events in the past thirty days, then you have successfully exposed yourself to novel experiences and situations. If the past thirty days have been a blur, it might suggest that you have been doing the same thing everyday.

In exposing yourself to novel experiences, you understand the world a little better. When you talk to someone who is/has specialized in a particular area, you will know what he/she is talking about.

There is opportunity on the weekends to direct my focus towards improving my understanding of figuring out what is important in life and what is necessary to get ahead in this fast paced world we all live in today.

I am on the look out for interesting books to read this summer. My focus is on accelerating my knowledge and success in life.

Going to the library Monday after work to pick these up:

1. Tom Wolfe: The Bonfire of the Vanities
2. Po Bronson: "Why Do I Love These People?": Understanding, Surviving, and Creating Your Own Family
3. Joan Didion: The Year of Magical Thinking

Any other suggests let me know!
